Transportation around Paris

We have twenty metro lines throughout the city, so travelling around Paris is very easy. In fact, the major points to see in the city are all served by the same line. You can get a pass for a day or a week. Ten tickets are only 13 euros.

Despite the relative ease and low cost of our public transportation, we don’t suggest riding the metro at night. It isn’t known to be dangerous, but we want to be extra careful about the safety of our guests.

This posting is incomplete and not entirely accurate. There are 14 Metro lines, and then several RER (regional train) lines. If you want to do route planning, the site ratp.com helps you plan trips inside Paris and is available in 6 languages (pick the flag) at the top of the page. I've ridden the Metro in Paris for more than 30 years without incident. Of course, every city has areas that tourists should avoid, but I would view the number 1 and 4 lines as being safe at all hours for anyone who avoids flashing money, jewelry, or the like.

I recommend researching the cost of tickets before arriving. Know which plans are available and which one is most cost effective for you (I prefer the carte orange). I've visited Paris a dozen times and feel relatively safe on the metro; however, I've witnessed 3 robberies over the years (pickpockets and purse snatchers only). I don't recommend carrying a purse on the metro. If you have to, don't sit near the doors; move in a few rows.
